RIM has revealed user downloads on the BlackBerry App World have now surpassed three billion.
The company posted the news on its Inside BlackBerry developer blog and stated this figure suggests around 2.5 million apps are downloaded from the store every day. RIM’s post also claimed the number of downloads ‘continues to increase.’
The news follows recent reports that RIM is laying off as many as 6,000 employees and its Canadian manufacturing partner, Celestica, will be winding down production of BlackBerry devices ahead of a total stop within 12 months.
Placing RIM’s new download and app statistics in a wider context takes the edge off their impact somewhat, BlackBerry App World has achieved three billion downloads with 90,000 apps and this is considerably less than Apple’s 30 billion downloads from its catalogue of 650,000 apps or Google Play’s 20 billion downloads from a choice of 600,000.
RIM is currently in a bit of a tight spot and many are expecting its forthcoming BlackBerry 10 platform to be a ‘make or break’ move. BlackBerry 10’s estimated release date has shifted from the end of 2012 and sometime in 2013 but reports of ‘intensified work hours’ suggest work is being put in to get the platform out to market as quickly as possible.
Despite continual reports of bad luck for the company RIM’s new CEO, Thorsten Heins, denied it was in a ‘death spiral’.
